LORD LEXOR IS DESTROYED

Dateline: 01-05-519

The Bereny Bugle has learnt that the leader of the Walkers on the Edge, Baron Marcus D'Alembert, has sent word to the King from the Brokenlands that the undead Lich Lord Lexor has been defeated and destroyed at his castle deep inside the Brokenlands.

Lexor is believed to have been behind last year’s Helltroop attacks on Crownheart, which resulted in the deaths of thousands, and also the ongoing attacks by the ‘Cold Lich Kings’ from the Great Forest against Bereny’s northern border. He appeared as a magical vision shortly after King Dirk’s coronation two years ago and threatened to destroy Bereny. He is also believed to have had a hand in King Slime’s goblin invasion, the Antithetical Cathedral, and the release of the plasmaise. In short, he is linked to just about every evil plot against Bereny of the past five years.

Furthermore, according to Baron D'Alembert, he really was a fallen crusader, and so may actually have been the Lord Lexor who was a former Lord Crusader of Selador and who was believed to have been killed after being convicted and outlawed for murder during the reign of King Mark III.

Baron Marcus and his party of adventurers reached Castle Lexor using the ‘Wooden Horse of Poldoon’, a massive artefact used by the goblins during the siege of Poldoon. Under investigation, it abruptly teleported itself and all aboard it into the Brokenlands. Among them was Bereny Bugle reporter Andrew Gilligan, but he was among a number of early casualties the expedition suffered at the hands of the castle’s fearsome defenders, which included massed legions of the terrible helltroops.

It has taken the Walkers over two years to penetrate the castle’s defences and overcome the defenders, and for a while it was feared by the Crown that they would be unable to prevail against such powerful opposition. But today the King commended Baron Marcus and his companions for their fine work, saying “For so few to defeat such terrible foes speaks volumes of your courage and skill at arms.”

The news comes amid reports that Helltroops have again been sighted near Crownheart, and that the city may be about to come under renewed attack. It remains to be seen if the Walker’s victory has really brought the threat against Bereny to an end or not.

Therefore for many, the satisfaction of learning of Lexor’s downfall is tempered with caution as to whether the attacks on Bereny are really at an end or not.

Meanwhile it is also not clear how Baron Marcus and his companions are going to return from the Brokenlands. A small number of adventurers travelled overland to Castle Lexor to aid in the final assault, but the journey back to Bereny is long and arduous. It is unclear though whether the Wooden Horse can be used to make a return journey to Poldoon or not.
